With the good weather in Galicia we cannot, if not, recommend places to visit that fill your soul with nature and you can shelter from the heat.
In this case we want to recommend you to visit the Insuas de Gres
(or Islas de Gres), located just 5 minutes by car from our cabins.
Six islets that emerged after the construction of the Portodemouros reservoir, five of them are connected to each other by bridges and stone steps suitable only for the bravest. Each of them baptized with a name:
- Insua of San Ramon
- Insua dos Namorados
- Beach Island
- Insua de Pachin
- Insua of A Palleta
These “insuas” have a medieval bridge that connects the municipalities of Vila de Cruces and Boqueixón and has great historical value. He witnessed a legendary battle between the troops of Napoleon Bonaparte and the locals of Ponteledesma and Gres, who defeated the French preventing their conquest, in this appointment we will tell you a little more.
On March 9, 1809, 2,000 peasants armed with farm tools, stones, and sticks managed to stop 2,000 soldiers of the Napoleonic army on the bridge, who were trying to cross the Ulla River to continue their advance toward the south of Galicia and enter Portugal.
Those peasants without ammunition defeated the best army in the world, armed with bayonets and cannons. It is not the only battle in which Napoleon’s army was scalded, but it was the only one in which the civilian population, without the support of the army, managed to defeat the French troops.
In addition to strolling around the islands, we recommend you stop for “tomar aglo”, lunch, or dinner at “O recuncho da Eira”, or at “A d’Rafael”
